I was commissioned by my uncle to draw an illustration of my late grandmother and his late daughter. I knew that this was a very special request, so I studied photographs of the two and drew them in our old family home. In order to suggest the idea of a heavenly afterlife, yet keep the focus onto the two figures in the foreground, I simplified the background, added detail to the two figures, and had them be backlit from the window.
The portraits of them facing each other celebrates them in the afterlife, and reassures that my grandmother is definitely taking care of my niece in heaven.
