Painted in acrylic on a wooden panel. 16x20 inches
For the Art of Science Exhibition at Crosstown Concourse
Hosted by Le Bonheur Children's Hospital
A collaboration between local science and local art, the exhibition paired Le Bonheur doctors and research with local artists. My piece is inspired by echocardiograms: ultrasounds of the heart. The ultrasound waves are created by crystals being struck by electricity. Those waves either pass through or reflect off of tissue in our bodies. They create a graphic image of colors that depict the speed of blood flow in the heart. I thought of the waves as little adventurers on an expedition to study our bodies, so I painted them as little figures at the entrance to a cave-like artery on their fantastic journey through the body!
I wanted to push the fantastical feeling of the adventure setting, so I chose a rainbow, Lisa-Frank inspired color palette and included iridescent glitter in a transparent layer of paint. To reference the scientific inspiration, I decided to frame the composition in a black radar-like shape, on the inside of a wood panel.
