For Juneteenth, there was a local celebration! It was quite the exciting event, so I went out to an African store and bought a patterned skirt and scarf to celebrate my culture with a new outfit. I loved the outfit so much that I decided to draw myself as if I were in a video game. When I posted the piece, I was commissioned to draw a friend in their Juneteenth outfit as well!
Both illustrations included patterning that proved to be a welcome challenge. After I narrowed down what visual information to include and simplify, I had fun stylizing the reference photos. Whereas my character would be a player/main character, I could see my friend a stylish shop keep with a ‘Look but don’t touch’ rule for their shop!
