Perseverance
Perseverance

Painted with Acrylic paint on a sanded wooden skateboard.

I find a lot of inspiration and hope in the perseverance of nature in its many forms. For this board, I wanted to celebrate that perseverance through the life cycle of Imperial Moths: from egg, caterpillar, pupa, and finally, to adult moth. I found comfort and amusement in discovering something as beautiful as the Imperial Moth, Eacles Imperialis, went through an unattractive, poop-like pupa stage before arriving at its more popular, gorgeous grand finale. I felt a kinship to the moth knowing that those pupa-like, transitional stages are not permanent on the never-ending road of growth.

I enjoyed rendering the shading on the leaves, including the oak one up top, along with the delicate detail of the moth’s wings. I wanted to utilize the natural wood texture of the board, so I left areas unpainted. Upon a final gloss varnish- the wood and painted colors all became beautifully saturated.
